The Geography

Conil de la Frontera is surrounded by a diverse landscape and breath-taking coastline. There's the old Spanish town, undeveloped countryside, pine forests and many traditional villages nearby to discover. The area reflects the 16,000 inhabitants' way of life - such as farming, fishing, trading, small businesses and a little tourism.

Natural and Interesting

Conil has 16 km of long sandy beaches, which are used for a variety of leisure activities, for all ages. They are said to be the most beautiful beaches of all the Spanish coastlines! Many stretch back to the dramatic cliffs. Seville, Cordoba, Cadiz, Jerez and Arcos are some of the historic towns nearby.

Retained as Andalucian

Conil is now becoming popular with summer tourists, particularly the Spanish themselves. The Spanish tourists help retain it's typical Andalucian spirit. There's narrow cobbled streets, authentic Tapas bars, street markets and Al Fresco cafes on the main plazas. You'll love the people. In July and August Conil is popular with the Spanish and the Town becomes busy and lively with traditional Spanish festivals.

Discover the Spanish History

The Moorish influence can be seen all around Conil town, which you'll need to discover yourself since most are situated in alleyways and streets. A guide book would be a good idea for this activity. It is a pleasure to find the highly creative and countless inner courtyards that the Spanish seem to love so much.

- Church of Santa Catalina
- Convento de la Victoria - featuring interesting paintings
- Convento de San Francesco de Paula - see the image of Nuestra Seņora de las Virtudes (Our Lady of Virtue) the Patron Saint of the town.

Spanish Food and Drink

If you enjoy wonderful fresh food and wine you'll find it at very reasonable prices in Conil. Dishes to try are the rice and cardillo, puchero (broth), potato salad, wild asparagus, and tagarninas...beef and pork meat, charcuterie, chackling and game meat.

Seafood is a speciality in this fishing village. So if you prefer fish try the excellent cuttlefish, squid, tooth bream, sole, red mullet, sardine. Tuna fish comes salted here, in oil or cooked with onions. For something different, try the ortiguillas (deep fried sea anemones), which you can only find in the Cadiz area.

For dessert, try Rosquetes and bizcochos and pastries (pestiņos, rosquitos and tortas), which are typical of Conil.
